TRAVEL DIARY | Bali part I - Rimba/Ayana, La Laguna

The Bali experience is something that can not be explained, especially when you get to share it with a few of your closest girlfriends. With most Bali adventures, it will normally involve a cultural and spirited journey. However in our case, it was filled with a lot of catching up, D&Ms, banters and of course photo shoots. Our vacation went for 4 days long, but as expected, it was far from enough.


Our first stop in Bali was Rimba Jimbaran, and as a guest here, we were able to visit and utilize the facilities of Ayana, the sister hotel. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with frangipani leis and welcome drinks. The room we stayed at Rimba was pretty standard, enough space for the 4 of us (even though we only booked for 2) and also very clean. The service was always excellent as they were all very friendly and attentive. We were all satisfied with everything provided by Rimba and definitely want to come back and stay here in the future.

Staying at Rimba is more affordable compared to Ayana and as we were able to use both resorts' facilities, we decided to book here. Transferring between both resorts and other facilities such as Kubu Beach was effortless and efficient as the free shuttle provided by the hotel come frequently. We spent most of our time exploring and relaxing at Ayana as we love the more traditional feel that it provides and there are more picturesque locations available such as the pool and bar area, the bougainvillea stairs near the entrance, Skye and Kubu Beach. Initially we wanted to have drinks at Rockbar but as expected, the line was ridiculously long nearing sunset and during the day it was scorching hot. So we quickly ditched the idea and went out to get early dinner by the sea at our favourite seafood restaurant, Menega.

The next day we stopped at La Laguna for lunch, brought to you by the same creative team behind La Favela and La Plancha. As soon as you stepped into the area, you are immediately greeted by a vintage and bohemian atmosphere; from the caravan-like carts at the entrance, the restaurant, to the intricate decor details on the tree and table. To no surprise, this place quickly gained popularity for its appearance, vibe and, of course, delicious food. We ordered pretty much everything from the Tapas selection including:
1. Meatballs (45k, 3 serves): farmer's style pork seasons with cumin and mixed herbs
2. Croquetas (50k, 3 serves): lightly bread crumbed filled with pork black pudding
3. Calamari Ala Romana (60k): served with garlic aioli and lemon wedge
4. Menage A Trois (55k, 5 serves): A trio of polenta, flash fried prawns and Jamon Serrano (dry/cured Spanish ham) served on miniature skewers
5. Sardinas (45k, 3 serves): pickled fisherman's sardines
6. Patatas Bravas: fried potato

My absolute favourite was the calamaris because of it perfect seasoning and crispness. Besides, you can never go wrong with anything deep fried. The Croquetas were crunchy and tasty as well, I didn't realize at the time that it was black pudding. Normally I would avoid it but to my surprise it tasted delicious. The only fussy critic I have to say is that I wish the polenta from Menage A Trois were a little bit fluffier, but the flavour combination of prawns and jamon serrano were perfect.
